The Foundation

HISTORY

Fondazione Museo Igor Mitoraj was established on 23 March 2022, by the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Tuscany, and the Municipality of Pietrasanta in accordance with Article 4, paragraph 1, of the Promotion Agreement signed on May 28, 2018. The Foundation is a non-profit organisation and is a participatory foundation with statutory and management autonomy.

As set forth in its Statute, the Fondazione aims to enrich Tuscany’s cultural offerings through national and international initiatives in contemporary art, to enhance the knowledge and artisanal heritage of the Pietrasanta area, and to promote the work of Igor Mitoraj by managing, preserving, and studying the collection received as a donation.

The collection, which currently consists of 69 works, was donated to the Italian State—and, on its behalf, to the Ministry of Culture—by Jean-Paul Sabatié, heir to the artist’s artistic legacy and current President of the Fondazione.

The management of this donation is the starting point for Fondazione’s work, Naming the museum after the Polish artist celebrates the exceptional bond between Mitoraj and the city of Pietrasanta—the place he chose as his creative workshop of choice and the hub of his worldwide production—and lays the groundwork for the museum to serve as a privileged observatory for exploring the world of contemporary sculpture.
