IGOR MITORAJ

Born in 1944, Igor Mitoraj grew up in communist Poland and trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the influence of Tadeusz Kantor. His desire for recognition led him to Paris in 1968, where his early successes in galleries were accompanied with inspiring trips to the Mediterranean.

The decisive turning point came with his discovery of sculpture and, in 1979, of the Versilia region: Mitoraj chose Pietrasanta as the location for his studio. While remaining independent of contemporary artistic movements, he achieved worldwide fame, counting among his successes participation in the 1986 Venice Biennale and the installation of his monumental works around the world. The artist passed away in Paris in 2014.

THE FOUNDATION

Two significant legacies of works by Igor Mitoraj, donated by his heir Jean-Paul Sabatié, led to the creation of the Fondazione Museo Igor Mitoraj, established in 2022 by the Ministry of Culture, the Region of Tuscany, and the Municipality of Pietrasanta.

The Foundation was established with the aim of enriching the cultural offerings in the field of contemporary art, a mission it fulfills through the Mitoraj Museum: a place dedicated to showcasing and promoting contemporary art, the work of Igor Mitoraj, and the artisanal heritage of the Pietrasanta area.
